Behind the Scenes: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Haul Away Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater with their mind on the movie they're there to watch. They see the giant screen, comfortable seats, and maybe the smell of freshly popped popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to make that experience possible—or what it takes when it's time to phase out decades of equipment and open the door for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers had the opportunity to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project through our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). Together, we assisted with the removal of outdated projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It wasn't your standard commercial move. It required careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Jobs like these are one of the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the finest parts of commercial moving is the range of work.
One week we're relocating an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're moving physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we find ourselves inside a movie theater, methodically disassembling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was particularly memorable because it entailed removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like traveling back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection became the standard in the industry.
For movie lovers, it was captivating.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move carries its own story.
Great Projects Start with Thoughtful Planning
Projects like this don't start when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is unplugged, our team works through logistics, scheduling, entry points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we oversaw every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the top advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is having access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who share the same dedication to professionalism and customer service. By pairing Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to complete the work smoothly from start to finish.
Cinemas weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection rooms are often tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, tight doorways, and limited access. A few sites have elevators, whereas others don't. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces involves much more than simply rolling them onto a dolly and making for the truck.
Each challenge has to be foreseen before work even begins.
That's when experience makes all the difference.
It's All About More Than Just Muscle
People often assume moving heavy equipment is purely about strength.
The reality is that commercial moving hinges on preparation, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal require specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and seasoned crews who know how to safely navigate oversized equipment through confined spaces.
Each projector had to be carefully disconnected, protected, guided through the building, and securely loaded for transport.
A lot of these systems are not only heavy—they're also remarkably delicate. One careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition could cause significant damage.
Patience and communication are just as important as physical strength.
Safeguarding the Building Is Equally Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're equally committed to safeguarding the customer's facility.
Commercial buildings represent a substantial investment, and even modest repairs can prove disruptive and expensive.
When a job is done, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Team Effort Makes the Difference
Sizable commercial moving projects are not a one-person job.
Every member of the crew has a role, and communication is critical from start to finish.
One team member may be steering equipment through a doorway while another stabilizes the load. Someone else is tracking clearances, while another crew member is readying the next piece for transport.
When seasoned crews work in sync, there's a rhythm that takes shape. That's expertise that isn't learned overnight.
Observing our team work together was a powerful example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's important to enjoy the experience.
Working inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our crew couldn't resist slipping downstairs for a handful of movie snacks between jobs on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where not many people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
These moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also have fun doing it.
Commercial Moving Goes Beyond Transportation
Many people assume moving companies simply load trucks and unload them at another location.
Commercial moving is much more than that.
These projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, specialized equipment handling, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Some businesses must relocate hundreds of employees in a weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment transported without disruption.
Some projects happen overnight to limit downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail the careful removal of specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every relocation demands flexibility, foresight, and problem solving.
Here at Baymeadows Movers, when somebody asks, "Can you help with this?" our first instinct is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've found that smooth projects always hinge on the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll come ready, keep them informed throughout the project, handle their property with care, and solve problems rather than create them.
Whether we're operating inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Safeguarding a Part of Movie History
Among the surprising highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines produced unforgettable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has evolved over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company has the opportunity to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it truly was an experience we'll never forget.
